In 1836 came to Carondolet, IL (near St. Louis) Came from Rochester, NY to Newton and the Kansas prairies in 1883, ministering to an immigrant people of German, Irish and French ancestry. In 1884, Mother Stanislaus Leary and five other sisters from Newton opened a school in Concordia, Kansas. Within a short time, 27 schools in eight states were opened reaching from western Kansas to northern Michigan, from Texas to Wyoming and Missouri. Institutions The cornerstone of the motherhouse on 13th and Washington was laid on May 15, 1902. Established St. Joseph's Hospital, Concordia, in 1903, which later became St. Ann's Home, and then Manna House of Prayer. Opened other hospitals in Sabetha, Salina, Seneca, and Manhattan all in Kansas, and in Belvidere, IL, and El Paso, TX. In 1915, acquired St. Joseph's Home in Abilene, an orphanage. In 1926, we acquired St. Mary's Academy in Silver City, NM when Sister Magdalen and her small band of sisters of St. Joseph of Silver City (formerly part of Tipton, Indiana), were no longer able to maintain that institution. Ministries During Vatican II, Pope John XXIII asked religious communities to go to underdeveloped countries. In 1963, we established a mission in Teresina, Piaui, Brazil, which continues to this day. Several of our Brazilian sisters will be home for the 125th opening celebration. Ministries: (sampling of ministries certainly not all of them!) Current Stats: 160 Sisters Future efforts Dream of a Peace Institute where we can vision ways of coming together in dialogue with many for the sake of peace. Organic gardening and also plan other ways of stewarding our environment. Exploring new ministries and ways to invite others to join us in our mission. Ways others can be in relationship to us: Associates - men/women; married/single; Catholic/non-Catholic share prayer, meals, service projects. Agregees - form of membership taking us back to our roots in 1650 France - women who would be eligible to enter community but for various reasons are unable to do so - study to become a full member of community taking vow of fidelity. Volunteers Donors And of course, vowed members!
