Sister Generosa Walker
Concordia, Kan.
Gratitude is my warm feeling as I review the past decades of my family and religious life. God’s gifts have been great and countless during my treasured years in our Congregation and with my family. Our eastern Kansas farm family consisted of my dear parents, three brothers and me.
To obtain a certificate in preparation for the teaching profession, I attended college, with the second year being at Marymount. For three years I taught on the Potawatomie Reservation. This was a good opportunity to realize and respect the dignity of all races and nations.
For some time I had felt that God might be calling me to the religious life. This inspiration may have begun or increased as I eagerly read copies of the Sacred Heart Messenger that my mother had saved with their lives of the saints and other inspiring articles. The example of the Sisters of St. Joseph at Marymount led me to ask if I might join them. I was privileged to enter the postulate with 16 other companions.
After profession, I taught in grade schools, in high schools and summer session math courses at Marymount. Then I was the bookkeeper at our St. Mary’s Convent for a dozen years before retiring at the Motherhouse.
During these years there have been many opportunities for spiritual growth including a yearly retreat and other enriching activities. For all that has been and is yet to be, I thank God, our Congregation, my family, and all others who have assisted in so many ways.
