The Maxims of the Little Institute

Maxim 32

When you happen to be abandoned by creatures, and even by God if God takes away sensible graces, remember the abandonment of the dear Savior on the cross and tenderly cherish your own in consideration of his.

And when living Maxim 31, live it in the same spirit as did Jesus on the cross. One feels abandoned, but one lives true to the life anyway. This fidelity is the ascesis for the apostolic life. . . and it is an ascesis to be cherished - with tenderness, with douceur; once again we are challenged to contemplate our life in the purity of this spirituality.

Can I remember loving suffering? What is the story of this? If not then, what about now?!

The Maxims, written by our founder, Father Jean-Pierre Medaille, in the late 1600s, are the essence of the spirituality of the Sisters of St. Joseph.

The reflections here are taken from Love's Design by Marcia Allen, CSJ. There are 100 maxims in all. A new maxim will be posted each week. We invite you to read the maxim and contemplate what it is saying to you. We also invite you to join us in praying for the prayer requests listed on this page. Blessings!
