Story of ‘Sylvester’ captures preschoolers’ imagination

web-Reading-LogoPreschoolers packed the final “Reading with Friends” in the series this morning (Friday, May 15) and listened raptly to Sandra Detrixhe’s telling of the tale of Sylvester the donkey.

Detrixhe brought to life William Steig’s classic book, “Sylvester and the Magic Pebble,” about collecting things and making wishes. Steig received the Caldecott Medal for the little book in 1970, and ultimately became even better known for his 1990 children’s book, “Shrek!”

“Reading with Friends” is a monthly storytime for children 3 to 5 years old, and each child receives a free copy of the featured book.

This series of four storytimes was made possible by a gift from the Cloud County Attorney’s Diversion Fund.

The Sisters of St. Joseph who operate Neighbor to Neighbor will continue the storytimes beginning again in September, thanks to a grant from the Dane G. Hansen Fund, through the Community Foundation. The schedule and books to be featured will be announced later this summer.
