Their ministries may have scattered them to the wind, but their Jubilee celebrations, marking their anniversary as Sisters of St. Joseph, brought them home to the Nazareth Motherhouse today (Sunday, June 12).

The six jubilarians this year represent 350 years of love and service to God and the dear neighbor.

The women honored with a special Mass and tribute program were:

  • Sister Julie Galan of Overland Park, Kan., who is celebrated her 70th anniversary as a Sister of St. Joseph. Sister Loretta Jasper presented her tribute.
  • Sister Helen Mick of Atlanta, Ga., who is celebrating her 60th jubilee. Sister Chris Meyer presented her tribute.
  • Sister Margaret Schreck of Concordia, who is celebrating her 60th jubilee. Sister Betty Suther presented her tribute.
  • Sister Mary Fran Simons of Gilbert, Ariz., who is celebrating her 60th jubilee. Sister Anna Marie Broxterman presented her tribute.
  • Sister Janet LeDuc of Concordia, who is celebrating her 50th jubilee. Sister Doris Marie Flax presented her tribute.

Bishop Edward Weisenburger of the Diocese of Salina celebrated the special Jubilee Liturgy this morning, with assistance from Father James Hoover, the Motherhouse chaplain, and Father Richard Storey.

Father Storey is pastor of Curé of Ars Catholic Parish in Leawood, Kan., where Sister Julie Galan has served for 47 years.

Sister Julie is a native of Chicago who taught grade school for a number of years before going to Curé of Ars in 1969.

Sister Helen, a Tipton, Kan., native, taught school for many years before serving as Motherhouse administrator in the 1980s. She moved to the Atlanta area in 1988 and has remained there, serving in a number of health care roles until her retirement from active ministry about a year ago.

Sister Margaret, from Marienthal, Kan., was also a teacher for many years, and eventually turned that experience into teaching English as a second language and volunteering with disadvantaged youth. More recently, she served for nearly 20 years as one of the most informed and entertaining tour guides at the Nazareth Motherhouse. Today she lives in Mount Joseph Senior Village in Concordia.

Sister Mary Fran, who was born and raised in Santa Rita, N.M., was a teacher and pastoral worker in her earlier years as a Sister of St. Joseph. Since 1986, she has been chaplain at Valley Hope Drug and Alcohol Treatment Center in Chandler, Ariz. The director there once called her “our very own Mother Teresa” because of her “enormous impact on the spiritual development of our patients.”

Sister Janet, from Jamestown, Kan., has served in a wide variety of nursing and pastoral roles in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Iowa. Most recently she served in Hays, Kan., and then Goodland, Kan., before returning to Concordia last year to assist with the needs of sisters living at Mount Joseph Senior Village.

Sister Susan, a native of Cawker City, Kan., spent her entire career serving as a staff nurse at St. Joseph’s Hospital, which later became Cloud County Health Center, in Concordia. She retired from the hospital two years ago, but continues her ministry by offering health assistance for sisters living at the Motherhouse.

In addition to the special Mass and tribute program, emceed by Sister Jodi Creten with music provided by Sister Dian Hall, the day also included a celebration dinner for sisters, family and friends. The meal was prepared and served by the Motherhouse dietary staff.
