Register now for board members’ workshop
A popular evening workshop for members of nonprofit boards of directors is returning to the Nazareth Motherhouse.
The free session, which includes supper, is set for Tuesday, Oct. 28, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Those who register before Oct. 21 will receive a free copy of “The Eight Principles of Effective Governance: A Handbook for Directors of Nonprofit Organizations” for your organization. Each organization will also be entered in a drawing for one of three donations from the Community Foundation for Cloud County, which is a sponsor of the event along with the Sisters of St. Joseph of Concordia.
To register, contact Sister Jean Rosemarynoski at sisterjean@csjkansas.org or 243-2149.
John Mize, author of “The Eight Principles” and a longtime Salina attorney, wrote the how-to guide after “serving on a dysfunctional board. These were very smart people, but I would come home after a meeting and think, ‘Why is this like this?’ “
Seeking an answer to that question eventually led Mize to Regis University, where in 2005 he received a master’s degree in nonprofit management. He wrote the handbook — packed with simple checklists and written in easy-to-understand language — as his master’s project.
Mize presented the same workshop at the Motherhouse two years ago. More than 50 individuals representing some 25 local nonprofit groups took part in that session, also sponsored by the Foundation and the Sisters.
Members of both large and small nonprofit organizations are encouraged to attend. Parking is available in the new lot on the east side of the Motherhouse, with entry through the handicap-accessible east door.
