Kansas Health Foundation documents reading program

Sister Marcia Allen and Dr. Paul Nelson shared duties this morning for the “Reading with Leaders” program at Neighbor to Neighbor.

For Alexander, it was a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. But for Wichita-based photographer Randy Tobias and writer Emily Millspaugh today (Friday, March 8) was a great day to see what funding from the Kansas Health Foundation has made possible at Concordia’s Neighbor to Neighbor center.

Tobias and Millspaugh drove to Concordia this morning to be on hand for “Reading with Leaders,” with Sister Marcia Allen and Dr. Paul Nelson reading “Alexander and the Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Day” to more than 40 preschoolers in the center’s upstairs playroom. Parents, grandparents and other caregivers relaxed downstairs with doughnuts, coffee and juice provided by the Sisters of St. Joseph.

“Reading with Leaders” is a yearlong storytelling program is coordinated by the Sisters of St. Joseph’s Neighborhood Initiatives office and hosted by Neighbor to Neighbor at 103 E. Sixth St. The program is funded in part with a grant from the Kansas Health Foundation, and Tobias and Millspaugh will provide a report and photographs about it for a foundation publication later this year.

The series for preschoolers (ages 3, 4 and 5) began in September and will continue through May. The next session is Friday, March 22,  at 10 a.m., with “The Giving Tree.” Each child registered receives a free copy of the book. Advance registration is required, by calling 785-262-4215.

After the storytelling time, the children were able to try out with the wide assortment of toys and books  in the upstairs playroom. Before leaving, each child received a copy of the book “Alexander and the Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Day” plus a small bag of snacks.

Here’s the schedule for the rest of the series:

  • March 22 — “The Giving Tree”
  • April 12 — “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie”
  • April 26 — “Kitty Claus,” read by author T.L. Needham and illustrator Lizzy Dodig
  • May 3 —   “Green Eggs & Ham”
