Guess how much children love Reading with Leaders?

November 30, 2012 by

Nearly 50 children filled both floors of Concordia’s Neighbor to Neighbor center Friday morning to answer that question as they listened to Marilyn Johnston and Jan Novlan read the book “Guess How Much I Love You.” The much-loved children’s story about Little Nutbrown Hare was written by Sam McBratney and illustrated by Anita Jeram.

It was the latest installment of the “Reading with Leaders” storytelling program coordinated by the Sisters of St. Joseph’s Neighborhood Initiatives office and hosted by Neighbor to Neighbor. The storytelling series began in September and will continue through May. The next session is Friday, Dec. 14, at 10 a.m., and the book to be read will be “Santa’s Little Helper.” Each child registered receives a free copy of the book. Advance registration is required, by calling 785-262-4215.

Upstairs in the center’s large playroom Friday morning, Marilyn Johnston read to about 30 children, with their parents, grandparents and care providers gathered around the outside edge of the large room. Downstairs in the smaller play area, Jan Novlan entertained a smaller group of preschoolers and family members.

After the storytelling time, the children all had snacks of cookies and chocolate milk and then were able to try out with the wide assortment of toys and books  in the upstairs playroom.

The program is funded in part with a grant from the Kansas Health Foundation.

Here’s the schedule for the rest of the series, with all the sessions at Neighbor to Neighbor, 103 E. Sixth St., Concordia:
