Sister Marquita Murguia died this afternoon (April 15, 2015) at Mount Joseph Senior Village in Concordia.

She was 93 years old and a Sister of St. Joseph for 74 years. She was born in El Paso, Texas, on Sept. 16, 1921, to Manuel and Maria Gonzales Murguia, the first of two children, and was baptized Lydia. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Concordia on Aug. 18, 1940. On March 18, 1941, Lydia received the habit of the Sisters of St. Joseph and was given the name Sister Marquita. She pronounced first vows on March 19, 1942, and final vows on Aug. 15, 1946.

Sister Marquita graduated in 1958 with a bachelor of arts from Marymount College, Salina, followed by a master’s degree in art from Notre Dame University in South Bend, Ind. She taught in schools staffed by the Sisters of St. Joseph in Pfeifer, Park, Seguin, Junction City and Salina, Kan.; Boonville, Mo.; Grand Island, Neb.; and El Paso.

Her works of art were shown in several exhibits in the United States, winning numerous awards. She worked in a wide variety of mediums, but may have been best known for her bronze sculptures, many of which adorn various rooms in the Nazareth Motherhouse.

In 2012 she returned to Kansas to retire at the Motherhouse in Concordia.

Sister Marquita was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Connie Montoya. She is survived by cousins, nieces and nephews.

A Bible Vigil Service will be held today, April 16, at 7 p.m. in the Sacred Heart Chapel at the Nazareth Motherhouse with Sister Rita Plante as the eulogist. The Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, April 17, at 10:30 a.m., also in the Motherhouse chapel, with Rev. Jim Hoover presiding. The burial will be in the Nazareth Motherhouse Cemetery.
