Motherhouse team shatters annual Relay for Life fundraising goal

August 18, 2012 by

As part of the Relay for Life “survivors’ lap” Saturday evening, everyone gathers in the parking lot near the swimming pool at Concordia City Park and releases balloons together.

Sisters, staff, family and friends joined scores of others Saturday evening for the annual 12-hour Cloud County Relay for Life in Concordia’s City Park.

The 32-member Nazareth Motherhouse team, led by captains Alfreda Maley and Sisters Dorothy Marquez and Shirley Meier, was part of a crowd of all ages from throughout Cloud County taking part in the annual fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. This year’s event began at 6 p.m. Saturday (Aug. 18), and concluded at 6 a.m. Sunday.

After the ceremonies that marked the start of the Relay, the walking itself began — with a lap through the park by cancer survivors. They were joined by their family and caregivers near the swimming pool and together released dozens of balloons into the balmy evening sky. Participants wore Relay for Life T-shirts that on the front read, “Celebrate. Remember’ Fight Back”  and on the back read, “I Am Hope.”

The Motherhouse team shattered their fundraising goal of $5,000 and won the honor of Top Fundraising Team with a total of $5,742. And team member Mary Jane Gallagher was the Top Fundraising Individual with $660.  They raised the bulk of the money through the sale of luminarias honoring cancer survivors and those who have died of the disease. Together, the preliminary total for half dozen or so teams taking part this year  was $21,923. Last year the Concordia event raised $27,845.

The Motherhouse team also raised funds with their concession stand, selling hamburgers, hot dogs, chips and drinks.

Sisters on the team this year were Sisters Betty Suther, Marcia Allen, Sylvia Winterscheidt, Ramona Medina, Esther Pineda, Loretta Jasper, Judy Stephens and Jeanette Wasinger. Other team members were Jesica Collins, Kayla Ramsey, Dottie Vohs, Marcia Mick, Rita Collette, Mary Jane Gallagher, Rope Dorman, Michelle Gallagher, Holly Brown, Brenda Coyle, Mary Frances Duvall, Tina Goff, Sue Hine, Tryston Jochems, Debbie Kalivoda, Rod Hine, Harry Morrison, Connie Morrison, Linda Stillabower, Janice Strait and Rebecca Woodford. Greg and Jerry Gallagher and Burl Maley were also on hand to help with the cooking and set up.

Relay for Life is a national fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, in which team members walk laps along the luminaria-lined path throughout the night. The point is to show that cancer never sleeps.

The annual event also remembers the people who have died of the disease while celebrating the lives of cancer survivors.

A definite event of remembering for families, survivors, those who continue the journey with active cancer, and those whose memory we hold in our hearts.
