Sister Edwardine Flavin died early this morning (May 27, 2016) at Mount Joseph Senior Village in Concordia. She was 92 and had been a Sister of St. Joseph of Concordia for 72 years.

She was born Sept. 18, 1923, in Cawker City., Kan., the daughter of John Patrick and Elizabeth Clara Heinen Flavin. She was the third of six children and was baptized Marcella Ruth.

She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Concordia on July 16, 1943. On March 19, 1944, Marcella received the habit of the Sisters of St. Joseph and was given the name Sister Edwardine. She pronounced first vows on March 19, 1945, and final vows on August 15, 1948.

Sister Edwardine served as financial manager for 25 years in a number of congregational owned and operated hospitals in Kansas and one in Belvidere, Ill. She was elected treasurer of the congregation in June 1965 and served in this position until 1985. When she left that position, she went to Spokane, Wash., where she studied Scripture and church history at Gonzaga University. Beginning in 1990, Sister served as bookkeeper at Manna House of Prayer, retiring from that position in 2005.

In 2010 she moved from the Motherhouse to Mount Joseph Senior Village.

Sister Edwardine was preceded in death by her parents, one sister and four brothers. She is survived by many nieces and nephews.

A Bible Vigil Service will be held Monday, May 30, at 7 p.m. in the Nazareth Motherhouse Auditorium, with Sister Christella Buser as the eulogist. The Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, May 31, at 10:30 a.m. in the Sacred Heart Chapel at the Motherhouse, with Rev. James Hoover presiding. The burial will be in the Nazareth Cemetery.

Chaput-Buoy Mortuary, 325 W. 6th St., Concordia, is in charge of arrangements.

    I will miss dear Edwardine when I go visit at Mt. Joseph. I’ve appreciated our visits these last 36 years..she was so wise and supportive. May she know the wonderful peace she so deserves.

    In honor and remembrance of Sister Edwardine. I remember her during my time in the community……..always a caring, loving, wonderful woman……….such an example to us…..younger members. I send love, prayerful hugs and blessings to her and those of you who are feeling the loss. Bless us, Sister Edwardine in your new life as you did while you were with us!
