Sister Kathleen Flood died Wednesday evening (Sept. 14, 2016) at Mount Joseph Senior Village in Concordia. She had been a Sister of St. Joseph of Concordia for 71 years, serving most of those years in the medical field in hospitals in Kansas and in El Paso, Texas. She was 90.

The vigil service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 16, in the Sacred Heart Chapel at the Nazareth Motherhouse in Concordia, with Sister Missy Ljungdahl as eulogoist. The Mass of Christian burial will also be on Friday, at 2:30 p.m., also at the Motherhouse, with Father James Hoover presiding. Burial in the Nazareth Cemetery will follow.

Mary Elizabeth Flood was born in El Paso on Oct. 27, 1925, the fifth of nine children of Michael Joseph and Kathryn Agnes Keavey Flood. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Concordia on Sept. 7, 1944. On March 18, 1945, Elizabeth received the habit of the Sisters of St. Joseph and was given the name Sister Kathleen. She pronounced first vows on March 19, 1946, and final vows on March 19, 1949.

She was educated at St. Mary Hospital School of Nursing in Manhattan, Kan., and later earned a bachelor’s degree in gerontology from Mount Angel (Ore.) College and a certificate in massage therapy from the El Paso Wellness Center.

Sister Kathleen began her nursing career at St. Mary Hospital in Manhattan, where she worked from 1946 to 1959. She then served as surgical supervisor at St. Joseph Hospital, Concordia, from 1959 to 1963. From 1964 to 1970, she was administrator of the Seneca (Kan.) Hospital, administrator, and then served for two years as administrator of the Medaille Center, Salina. From 1975 to 1980, she worked as a physician assistant in the office of Dr. Wendell Nickell, Salina.

She then returned to her native city where from 1982 to 1990, she supervised emergency rooms and later a surgical clinic at R.E. Thomason General Hospital (now University Medical Center), El Paso.

After her retirement from the medical field, she volunteered from 1991 to 2008 for Centro Mujeres, and oversaw the congregation’s guest house in El Paso.

In 2009 she retired to the Motherhouse in Concordia, and in 2011 moved to Mount Joseph Senior Village, Concordia. She celebrated her 70th anniversary as a Sister of St. Joseph in 2015.

Sister Kathleen was preceded in death by her parents and six brothers. She is survived by one sister, Isabell Marie Flood, and one brother, Francis Flood, both of El Paso.
