Sister Miriam Vaughan died July 25, 2015, at Cloud County Health Center in Concordia. She was 86 years old and a Sister of St. Joseph of Concordia for 67 years.

She was born in Oklahoma City, Okla., on March 29, 1929, to Harold and Louise Knaup Vaughan, the third of six children, and was baptized Martha Lou. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Concordia on Feb. 2, 1948. On Aug. 14, 1948, Martha Lou received the habit of the Sisters of St. Joseph and was given the name Sister Miriam Edward. She pronounced first vows on Aug. 15, 1949, and final vows on Aug. 15, 1952.

Sister Miriam received a bachelor’s degree in psychology in 1958 from Marymount College, Salina. In 1960 and 1967 she received master’s and doctoral degrees respectively from St. Louis University. In 1967 Sister Miriam returned to Marymount College to chair the Psychology Department while also serving as an adjunct assistant professor at Kansas State University in Manhattan. In 1973 Sister Miriam was appointed a professor of psychology. In 1980 Sister Miriam, along with her twin, Sister Louise Marie, accepted an appointment by the Bishop of the Salina Diocese to become advocates for the Salina Diocesan Marriage Tribunal. Sister Miriam served in this capacity until her retirement in 1995. In 1992 she moved to the Motherhouse in Concordia; then in 2011 she moved to Mount Joseph Senior Community.

Sister Miriam was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters, including her twin who died in November 2012. She is survived by one brother, James of Springfield, Mo., and one sister, Dorothy Otott of The Village, Fla.

A Bible Vigil Service will be held July 28 at 7 p.m. in the Sacred Heart Chapel of the Nazareth Motherhouse on Concordia,  with Sister Janet Lander as the eulogist. The Mass of Christian Burial will be July 29 at 10:30 a.m. also in the Motherhouse chapel with Rev. James Hoover presiding. The burial will be in the Nazareth Motherhouse Cemetery.
