Sisters welcome guests to Holiday Reception

December 4, 2014 by

The halls were decked with boughs of holly, the sisters had donned gay Christmas apparel and an array of pianists provided the ancient Yuletide carols.

But what brought out the jolly in most guests at this evening’s Motherhouse Holiday Reception  were the 15 delightfully decorated entries in Christmas Tree Lane.

This year’s Holiday Reception was held the evening before the Christmas Tree Lane gala and auction so that more people would be able to enjoy the 4 1/2-foot trees decorated by local nonprofit organizations.

All the money raised in donations this evening, plus ticket sales to the Friday evening event and the live auction goes to each organization. The annual fundraiser is hosted by the Sisters of St. Joseph as their gift to the community and to the organizations taking part.

Dannie Kearn is the guest auctioneer for the Friday evening event, and online bidding will be available until 6 p.m. Friday.

At this evening’s Holiday Reception, guests were treated to refreshments and live music provided by pianists Sister Lucy Schneider, DeeDee Coppoc (including a duet with Jaci Brown), John Paul Breault and Sister Beth Stover.

Door prize winners were:

  • Margo Hosie of Concordia, who won a nativity statue
  • Roy Anderson of Concordia, who won the s’mores ornament and cookie jar set
  • Deb Weiss of Papillion, Neb., who won the hand-painted sleigh

Everyone had a chance to vote on their favorite Christmas Tree Lane entry, and that People’s Choice Award will be announced Friday evening.

The organizations that decorated trees this year are:

  • Big Brothers Big Sisters
  • Brown Grand Theatre
  • Cloud County Community College Foundation
  • Cloud County Community Resource Center
  • Cloud County Health Center
  • Cloud County Health Center Auxiliary
  • Club 81 Youth Center
  • Domestic Violence Association of Central Kansas (DVACK)
  • Helping Hands program at Manna House of Prayer
  • Motherhouse Heritage Room Preservation Project
  • National Orphan Train Complex
  • NCK Down Syndrome Society
  • NCK Paws
  • OCCK Inc.
