Sunday dinner with the Sisters: We have the winners!

Despite spring weather that might have tempted people to stay outside, more than 500 came inside the Nazareth Motherhouse Sunday for a spaghetti dinner with the Sisters of St. Joseph.

While here, they also had the chance to win big prizes, bid on art pieces and other items, browse a well-stocked bake sale and buy some of the dozens of grab bag surprises.

One of the surprises for the sisters, for whom this annual event is the year’s biggest fundraiser, was a donation of nearly a dozen pieces from Jilka Furniture in Salina.

Bud and Loretta Jilka, who are in the process of closing their family’s two Salina stores, donated an array of framed artwork, candlesticks and other decorative pieces that were included in the silent auction. A number of quilts, art pieces and other home décor items had already been donated for the auction.

Sunday’s event served 510 dinners and raised nearly $10,600, with about $2,200 of that coming from the silent auction items.

In the prize drawings, the winners were:

  • $500 cash — Marion Steichen, Salina
  • $350 cash — Janet and Richard Berger, Nicholasville, N.Y.
  • $250 cash — Ron Meyer, Fernley, Nev.
  • Kansas State University football autographed by Coach Bill Snyder — Sharon Bates, Concordia
  • Kansas State University basketball autographed by Coach Bruce Weber — Bob Steimel, Concordia
  • Five-burner CharBroil gas grill — Cindy Dunlap, Concordia
  • Two wrought iron park benches — Georgiann Bauer, Pawnee Rock, Kan.
  • A quilt handmade by Sister Betty Suther — Marvine Oborny, Bellwood, Neb.

The annual special event is organized by the sisters’ Development Office, with months of work by director Holly Brown and assistant Amanda Jeardoe. On Sunday, Sister Loretta Jasper coordinated the legion of volunteers who came from across the state and beyond to help.
