Canonical Membership

The Sisters of St. Joseph of Concordia, Kansas, trace their origins to six French women and Jean Pierre Medaille, S.J., who, around 1650, established the first community of St. Joseph in LePuy, France. Contrary to prevailing custom for religious, these women made simple vows and were not cloistered since their mission called them to perform all the works of mercy of which the “dear neighbor” stood in need.

Fr. Medaille told our first Sisters that they were to “do whatever a woman is capable of doing.” Today our Sisters work in a variety of ministries and serve wherever there is a need. We have Sisters in Kansas and other states in the U.S., as well as in Brazil.

The Sisters of St. Joseph of Concordia are a Pontifical apostolic Congregation. The life and works of our Congregation are directed to a single end: the union of ourselves and all other people with God and with one another in and through Jesus Christ.
